Allergies

Allergies are more than annoying! They can truly be a detriment to your daily life, and in some cases, they may even be Life-threatening. Thankfully, they can be well treated.

Allergies are common, affecting more than one in every five people, and result from an abnormal response of the immune system to substances in the world around us. For most of us, these substances are harmless, but when they cause a reaction, we refer to these substances as allergens. When a susceptible person is exposed to allergens, he or she develops an allergic response- or reaction. This response is actually a cascade of chemical reactions in the body’s tissues that most often involves a protein called “histamine,” which results in allergic symptoms. Most allergic reactions result in common symptoms including sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, itching or rashes. Moderate or severe reactions may cause wheezing, respiratory distress, abdominal pain, cramps, vomiting, dizziness, or collapse. The variety of substances to which a person can become sensitized is endless. Food allergies are a special case and often require particular care and direction on avoidance.
