Michael Rontal, M.D.


Dr. Michael Rontal grew up in Detroit, Michigan and graduated Cooley High School in 1958. He then attended the University of Michigan, completing medical school in 1965. Dr. Michael Rontal has practiced Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) medicine (Otolaryngology) since completing his residency at Washington University in St. Louis in 1970. After residency Dr. Rontal entered the United States Army and was assigned to William Beaumont Hospital, Fort Bliss, Texas. He spent 2 years there as the chief of Otolaryngology, and he attained the rank of Major.
 

  In 1972, Dr. Rontal joined the prestigious Hauser Clinic. At that time, Dr. Rontal practiced with his brother, Dr. Eugene Rontal, and Dr. I. Jerome Hauser, an icon in Detroit medicine. Initially, he worked out of Sinai Hospital in Detroit, and after 5 years he became co-chief of the ENT service with his brother, Dr. Eugene Rontal.

The practice moved to Southfield in 1976 where it remained for 20 years before moving again to Farmington Hills. Throughout this time the clinic was aligned with Sinai Hospital until its eventual closure in 1996. Dr. Rontal moved his practice to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Providence Hospital in Southfield, and the Detroit Medical Center.

Clinically, Dr. Rontal treats the full spectrum of otolaryngology patients including both pediatrics and adults. His particular interests include both disease of voice as well as those of the nose and sinuses.

Dr. Rontal has maintained an academic interest in the problems associated with the ears, nose and throat. In 1976 he was appointed to the staff of the Otolaryngology Department at the University of Michigan and has been promoted to the rank of full Professor in that department. With his brother, they have investigated and written about everything from sports injuries to voice spectrography. He pioneered the application of lasers in the head and neck beginning in the 1970’s. He has written extensively about disease of the larynx including the early, the use of botulinum toxin for spasmodic dysphonia, the treatment of bilateral vocal cord paralysis and the treatment of unilateral vocal paralysis by endoscopic injection. He has published an atlas of anatomy of the sinuses and their relation to sinus surgery. He is presently studying bacterial biofilms in chronic sinusitis using electron microscopy.

For his work, Dr. Rontal has been recognized as one of the “Best Doctors” in southeastern Michigan. He has been elected to the senior societies of Otolaryngology including the American Laryngologic Association, the Triologic Society, the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery, the American Broncho Esophogologic Association and the American Society for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Rontal is a member and past president of the Michigan Otolaryngologic Society.

Dr. Rontal is married and has three sons who are doctors, two in Otolaryngology.
