Jan Akervall, M.D., PH.D. Dr. Akervall was born 1960 in Linkoping, Sweden. After completing
his military service he studied Theoretical Physics at Chalmers Technical
University, Gothenburg, Sweden before going into medicine. |

Academically, Dr. Akervall has published innovative work in resection techniques and post-resection reconstruction of head and neck cancer. He holds a U.S. patent for an awarded surgical procedure. In addition, he has pursued the application of his gene analysis to clinical testing for head and neck cancer. Dr. Akervall worked for 10 years at the University Hospital in Lund, Sweden, as a full-time Otolaryngologist. During his tenure he served as Associate Professor and Director of the Head and Neck Surgery Division in the department of Otolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery. In this appointment he was in charge of the management and surgical treatment of head and neck cancer for all of southern Sweden. He was also responsible for the training of otolaryngology specialists in southern Sweden. Dr. Akervall is a member of numerous otolaryngological and cancer associations, among which are Scandinavian Society for Head and Neck Oncology, American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), Michigan Oto-Laryngological Society (MOS), and American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS). Additionally, Dr. Akervall is a member of the editorial board of the internationally recognized medical journal Acta Otolaryngologica, and frequently reviews scientific studies for one of the world’s best renowned cancer journals, Clinical Cancer Research. Since the summer of 2004, Dr. Akervall has been a partner of The Rontal Clinic. He is a staff Otolaryngologist at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and the Detroit Medical Center, where he performs surgery.
