The
History of The Rontal Clinic.
The Rontal Clinic was
started in 1972 after Doctors Michael and Eugene Rontal assumed an existing
practice
from
Dr. Jerome
Hauser
that dated
back to
the
late 1930’s. Both physicians had strong roots in the Detroit area, attending
Cooley High School, graduating from the University of Michigan Medical School,
and interning at Sinai Hospital of Detroit. After completing their internship,
they each sought specialty training in ear, nose, and throat and head neck
surgery.
Michael left for St.
Louis where he did his residency at Washington University under Dr. Joseph Ogura,
a renowned
and
innovative cancer
surgeon.
From there
he entered the U.S. Army as the chief of the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic at
Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. After two years he returned to Detroit to enter
practice.
Eugene followed
his internship with a residency in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota
under
Dr. Michael
Paparella,
a distinguished
ear surgeon. The University of Minnesota was also known for cutting-edge
work in endoscopy, head and neck cancer surgery, and trauma surgery.
Upon completing residency, Dr. Eugene Rontal returned to Detroit
and
joined his brother in practice.
During the ensuing
thirty years, these two physicians developed a nationally recognized practice
that
combined
innovative
clinical
work with
academic
excellence. Out of this clinic the two published over one hundred scientific
papers, chapters in many of the standard textbooks of the day, and international
recognition of their work by peer review and lay publications. In the process
they both achieved the position of Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head
and Neck surgery at the University of Michigan.
In 2004, Dr.
Jan Akervall joined the Rontal Clinic. Trained at the University Hospital in Lund,
Sweden
and
at the
University
of
Michigan,
Dr.
Akervall enhanced the clinic with a vast knowledge of the treatment of head and neck
cancer and reconstruction of surgical defects. In addition, he has developed
at Beaumont Hospital research protocols into the causes, detection and treatment
of both early and advanced cancers.
In
2005, Dr. Daniel Rontal finished his training at the University of Michigan
and joined
the Rontal
Clinic.
Though he
was
trained
broadly
in all areas of Ear, Nose and Throat, Dr. Daniel
Rontal has a particular
interest in sinus disease and head and neck problems, particularly
that involving the thyroid gland. His academic accomplishments have
included research in inner ear embryology and tissue engineering for
surgical
reconstruction.
Throughout
the history of our clinic, the care and well-being of our patients
has always
been
our
