Eugene Rontal, M.D.

Dr. Eugene Rontal, M.D. grew up in Detroit, graduating from Cooley High School in 1960. After graduation he entered the University of Michigan where received his M.D. degree in 1967. After a year of internship and a year of general surgery training at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, Dr. Eugene Rontal went to the University of Minnesota for three years as an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) resident.

 

      
      After completion of his residency, Dr. Eugene Rontal returned to the Detroit area where he joined his brother, Michael, in practice with Dr. I. Jerome Hauser. The Hauser Clinic, as it was originally known, had been in existence since 1938 with a practice based in northwest Detroit. Sinai Hospital was its base hospital. For the next twenty years Dr. Eugene Rontal practiced there with his brother, Michael, serving as co-chief of the Department of Otolaryngology. Upon Sinai Hospital’s closure, the practice moved to Farmington Hills, and Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) have become his main hospitals.

       Dr. Rontal has an extensive bibliography, publishing numerous scientific articles and authoring chapters in several textbooks. The majority of his publications have focused on diseases of the larynx and sinus along with articles on bone implants in the jaw, sports injuries and voice analysis. Dr. Rontal has been quoted widely in lay publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, and Time Magazine. He has held an academic position in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School since 1974 and is currently a Professor.

       He was board certified in 1972 and is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology. His is a Fellow of the Amercian College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the Trilogic Society, a Fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and a member of the American Bronchoesophagological Association. In addition, he is a member of the American Laryngological Association.

       Dr. Rontal is married with two children. His interests include fishing, skiing, bicycling and writing mystery novels, two of which are currently in print.
